Synching all my Google Calendars / failing TB calendar

Beitrag von PatrickW »

FJ,

Many thanks for making 1.6.0 available. I was eager to try out the new way to synch with my Google Calendars; however, it only appears to show me the calendars where I am an owner - and not any other... :(

So, I thought I'd be clever and see what happened when I tried synching with my Thunderbird Lightning calendars (which are actually just links to my Google Calendars). This time I could see ALL the calendars, which looked like good news; however, when I tried to synch, the focus moved from MPE to Thunderbird, and when I clicked back on MPE, I got an error box telling me "Loading entries for Thunderbird failed!" More :(

Any suggestions on how to either be able to add my other Google Calendars, or to make the Lightning synch work?

Many thanks, Patrick

Edit: of course, it might have helped if I'd mentioned that I'm using a SE T610, Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 & Lightning 0.5 !

Edit2: oh yes, and perhaps this might help also...

This probably means, that the Thunderbird Plugin is experiencing an error.

Please check the thunderbird error console for entries relating to the mpe addon and post them here.

As an alternative you could sync MPE directly with your google calendars, bypassing thunderbird in this case.

NP,

Thanks for the reply.

There's no message in the TB Tools / Error Console.

The alternative you suggest is what I tried to do first; however, if I go direct to the Google Calendar, I'm not able to see all the calendars I want to synch with my 'phone - hence why I tried the Lightning route!

1) Do all your google calendars work in lightning?
2) try the following command from the command line:

thunderbird -mpe list-calendars=c:\cals.txt

Does it create a file c:\cals.txt and what is in it? How long does it take to run?

NP,

1) Yes, they all work in Lightning

2) It does create the file; however, what I found is that when I ran the command line command, it seemed to take a loooong time checking for updates to extensions. I eventually cancelled the check, at which point the cal.txt file was created.

Some examples of the 12 entries in the file (I have 12 matching calendars in Lightning) are:

St Mary's http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/2fe ... /basic.ics RW #66CCCC
High Barn http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/jam ... /basic.ics RW #33FF33
Dunmow http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/evd ... /basic.ics RW #CCCCFF
F1 http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/iav ... /basic.ics RW #FF0000
WRC http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/2bo ... /basic.ics RW #9999FF
Christian http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/chr ... /basic.ics RW #339999
UK Holidays http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/uk% ... /basic.ics RW #CC66CC

Apologies for not putting them all in here; however, I assume that would mean they could all be read!

Many thanks, Patrick

Well, does thunderbird check for extension updates such a long time EVERY time you start it? That should not happen; on which extension does it hang?
This hanging is probably the cause of your problems, because MPE goes into timeout if thunderbird hangs too long. BTW: For sync to work reliably, you need to have thunderbird already running when you try to sync with MPE. Then there should be no extension check during sync.

PS: I'm away now until Sunday, I'll probably won't have time to answer in between.

NP,

The looong update time only started when I installed the MPE extension; however, I notice today that when I started TB, it DIDN'T take a long time - so I'm hoping things have got back to normal.

However, I've again tried to do a calendar synch this evening. Unfortunately both ways of trying to get my calendars are working just as badly as before: going to Google Calendar shows me only a selection of the calendars which I use :( ; trying to synch with my Lightning calendars fails. Actually, tonight it failed worse than usual - I started the synch and was taken immediately to TB, and at the same time, MPE appears to close!

Any more thoughts?

Well, I've seen the hanging in the extension check too, but only after a thunderbird version upgrade and only once. This should not be your problem.

So back to square one:

1) You can generate the list file with thunderbird -mpe list-calendars=c:\cals.txt, you say.

2) Can you choose your calendars in MPE synchronisation settings, or is this not possible.

3) If 2) is possible, does the sync fail? In this case please try the command: thunderbird -mpe export-items=c:\items.txt. You should then find all your calendar items from all selected calendars in this file.

4) If MPE hangs or crashes, try the current MPE debug update:

http://www.fjsoft.at/files/MyPhoneExplo ... Update.exe

5) Please report the results.

Hi NP,

1) Yes, it shows all my calendars

2) If I choose Lightning, then Yes, I can see - and select - all my calendars. If I choose Google Calendar, then I see only the calendars which I own. The others which I can either read or read/write (but don't 'own') do not show.

3) Yes, the synch with Lightning fails. I've tried your command, and that doesn't work. I get a TB message about checking the compatibility of my extensions (the one I'd mentioned before, but has since disappeared - until now). It just sits there apparently doing nothing, so I eventually cancel the screen, but it hasn't created the items.txt file :(

4) I've this evening installed 1.6.1 - and still have the same problem. Is the file you suggest downloading still needed, or is it part of the latest build?

Patrick

PS Just closed MPE to restart and see if the log file might be worth sending you; however, when I restarted MPE, I got a "Could not open COM10!" error message... :x

Some more questions:

Regarding 1) and 2): There is a column in the items.txt file that contains an "RW" or an "RO" (for read/write calendar or read only calendar). MPE currently supports only RW calendars for sync! So if the RO calendars are missing things are as they are currently designed.

Regarding 3): This is getting stranger by the minute. Just to be clear about this: Please start Thunderbird normally and leave it open; THEN go to the command line and execute thunderbird -mpe export-items=C:\items.txt

If the command fails again, please check the error console of the already running thunderbird for errors.

Oh, and what I would like to know: Do you have multiple Thunderbird profiles? If yes, this might cause your problems.

NP,

Re 1) and 2) - is it likely / possible that the ability to synch with RO Google Calendars could be added? Whilst it's great to be able to do some synchronisation with Google Calendars, it would obviously be ideal if I could choose all my calendars.

Re 3). In an effort to minimise potential for problems, I may have made things slightly worse - or, at least, different. I noticed in Control Panel that I had 2 copies of Thunderbird, so used C/P to remove the earlier version. I hadn't noticed any problem having done this until I tried to run the command you requested; when I try and run it, I get a message saying "Windows cannot find 'thunderbird'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." So, I used the 'Browse' option to find the Thunderbird folder, then pasted the command, only to get the following message: "thunderbird -mpe export-items=C:\items.txt The above file name is invalid".

I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I can find any old TB profiles.

Many thanks for your help.

Well, regarding RO calendars, this is something FJ neeeds to do. A readonly calendar needs a different synching logic.

Regarding your setup: I suggest you deinstall Thunderbird completely (this will NOT delete your profiles); then install thunderbird again and choose the right profile as default profile; if you have more than one profile (use Profile Manager to check this), delete the ones you don't use.

The error message you see is probably due to the fact that your Windows search path (%PATH%) is wrong; you can change it in your system settings (under environment variables).

NP,

Re. RO calendars: I'll add that to the requests page!

Well, I've deleted Thunderbird and reinstalled it; then gone into the Profile Manager and deleted an old profile.

Leaving TB open, I ran the command. All that happened was that TB popped up, but no file has been created :-(

I've looked in the TB error console, and can see 2 very similar-looking entries, ie

Error: [Exception... "'Calender http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/pat ... vate-xxxxx not found!' when calling method: [mpeIMyPhoneExplorer::WriteItems]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Patrick/My%20Documents/email/pwhittic/extensions/myphoneexplorer@fjsoft.at/components/mpecli.js :: handler_handle :: line 97" data: no]
Source File: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Patrick/My%20Documents/email/pwhittic/extensions/myphoneexplorer@fjsoft.at/components/mpecli.js
Line: 97

and

Error: Exception caught during -mpe export-items: [Exception... "'Calender http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/pat ... te-xxxxxxx not found!' when calling method: [mpeIMyPhoneExplorer::WriteItems]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Patrick/My%20Documents/email/pwhittic/extensions/myphoneexplorer@fjsoft.at/components/mpecli.js :: handler_handle :: line 97" data: no]

[Note: I've replaced the exact reference to my private calendar with XXXs]

Any further ideas?

Well, this error points to a problem in communicating the URLs of the selected calendars to the MPE-Thunderbird plugin. The error message shows that a calendar is selected for sync (in the MPE preferences) that is not known in Thunderbird - this should not be possible.

Please check out: What is the contents of the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MyPhoneExplorer\Mozilla\Calendar

It SHOULD contain the URLs of your calendars concatenated and separated by "|"-characters.

Then (once more please) execute thunderbird -mpe list-cals=c:\cals.txt
After this, the file cals.txt should contain a list (one per line) of the calendars configured in lightning. Please compare the URLS in the registry to those in the file - character by character - and report if there are any differences. Please also verify that none of the URLs contains the "|"-character by itself - this should be the case anyway, because it is not a legal character for an URL, but better be sure - Google URLs are quite cyptic...

NJ,

OK, here's the content of the registry key. I've again replaced the private addresses with Xs, and put a line return after the |s

http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/2fe ... basic.ics|
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/us0 ... basic.ics|
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/a27 ... basic.ics|
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/jam ... basic.ics|
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/pat ... vate-XXXXX

So, not all my calendars included :-(

I've again run the thunderbird -mpe list-cals=c:\cals.txt command, and again it's done nothing...

Using Lightning as the synch calendar, I can synch some of my calendars - I just don't seem to be able to choose them all without getting the error message. I've tried various calendars, and individually they seem to work; I've tried a few of them at the same time, and they appear to work. I can't however, work out just what causes it to break. I've also increased the interface timeout to 300s - just in case it wanted more time...

Any other thoughts??

Vielen Dank.

OK, the calendars listed in the registry are the calendars you selected the last time you were in MPEs extended synchronisation settings for Lightning.

What do you mean, the command does nothing? This are the possible reasons:

1) The command line is not able to find the thunderbird executable. In this case, you should get an error message "the command "thunderbird" is spelled wrong ..." or something like that. In that case, check your PATH setting (or simply cd into your thunderbird program directory).

2) The command line executes thunderbird - a thunderbird window opens but no file is created. First possible reason: the MPE extension is not installed in your current thunderbird profile - please check this using Addon Manager. Second possible reason: the MPE extension is installed but an error occured. In this case you should see an errormessage if you open the Thunderbird Javascript error console.

The command simply cannot do nothing...

NP,

Really, the command does nothing!

1) I don't get an error message, so I'm assuming it runs OK

2) Whether I try it with TB open or closed, it does nothing. No error message in TB error console, no file created in c:\ If I look in my Addons, I can see MyPhoneExplorer 0.8.29

Any more hints?

Well, you have me seriously confused by now... do the MPE extended synchronisation settings show the calendars you have configured in lightning?

Please tell me also in which directory you have installed your Thunderbird? Is it c:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird ?

Can you give me the setting of your PATH variable? (Open a command line window and enter "path", it will display the current setting.)

NP,

Glad it's not just me getting confused! :)

Apologies if I'm not describing things clearly enough.

If I select Thunderbird Lightning and then choose Advanced, I can see 11 calendars. I can 'tick' all of them also, but the synch always fails; however, if I only tick one / a few of them, it works.

If I select Google Calendar and then choose Advanced, I can see 7 calendars - and synching with these works.

TB is, as you suggest, in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird

Re 'path': I'm afraid I've got the same problem here as I had for an earlier issue - I get a message saying ""Windows cannot find 'path'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." I've done a search for 'path.*' but can't find anything - do you know where I'd find it?

path is a CLI builtin - it is not an exe. So be sure to type "path" not "path.exe" - OH, it just dawns on me: are you trying all these commands directly from "Execute" in your start menu? This won't work.

I'm sorry, I was presuming too much: When I say "enter commands on the command line" I really mean: "type cmd in your Execute menu; then a command line window will open, and THEN type the command I told you".

So, once again: Open a command line window by executing "cmd"; THEN give me the result of the command "path". Then enter the command

"thunderbird -mpe list-cals=c:\cals.txt" - if it complains about not finding thunderbird try the following command:

cd "\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird"<RETURN>
thunderbird -mpe list-cals=c:\cals.txt<RETURN>

(Where <RETURN> means pressing the RETURN key...)

So when you follow these instructions, you simply MUST have a c:\cals.txt file, where you can compare the URLs to those in the registry.

Also, does synchronisation work if you choose only read/write calendars in MPE?
