I'm trying to setup a friend's Toshiba notebook PC [Win 7 or 8] for MPE on his Moto Droid X2.

Normally MyPhoneExplorer should detect the location of the external card automatically. Please check if you are able to see the external card in \System storage\mnt\ and if yes then tell me the path. Also check the again if you are using the latest versions:

In this case the ADB-Drivers were not installed. And you are sure that "USB-Debugging" is still enabled in phone ? Are there any missing drivers shown in devicemanager ?

It works on Samsung also when Mass storage is enabled but in this mode MPE will not be able to access your files. Check your devicemanager for missing drivers. the ADB-Drivers are listed as "Samsung Android ADB Interface"
