Fault handling when synchronizing towards Outlook

Beitrag von pade »

It looks like there are some problems when connection to the phone (via blue-tooth) are lost. One thing is that the signal strength and battery capacity are still shown when the connection are lost. Not a big problem though...

But the big thing is that the fault-handling are a little to verbose and sometimes not correct. Consider this user case:

I want to have my phone updated at all time. I walk in and out of my office the whole day and every time my phone is within blue-tooth range I want to synchronize my phone and Outlook 2003.
I have no use of seeing any information about the synchronization process since I totally thrust this application, right... One good thing though could be to see in the MPE toolbar icon the time since the last successfully synchronization, maybe a threshold level could be configured that changes the toolbar icon into yellow after a specified time without synchronizing. But now to the problem...
  • When I walk out of my office during a synchronization, I don't want my PC to pop up a messages box telling me that the synchronization has failed due to a connection problem (Error Connection to phone not possible). The reason is that I fully thrust this application to do a synchronize the next time I walk into the office.
  • The second problem is that it looks like I'm in this situations (when I retry to synchronize) gets duplicated events in my phones organizer. I have now set up the MPE to only synchronize from Outlook to not get duplicated events back to my outlook calendar.
My change request are then as follow:
  • On automatically started synchronisations; Error messages due to connections problems shall not been shown to the user. Neither on synchronisations started from a scheduler (command line synchronization with special switch, maybe error-handling=silent)
  • There shall be an indication in the toolbar icon that tells the time elapsed since the last successful synchronization
  • The problem with duplicated events in the phones organiser when a synchronization has been aborted due to connection problem must be solved
  • It shall be possible to configure a threshold value for the longest time since that last successful synchronization. When the limit has passed, the toolbar icon shall be colored yellow.
  • When MPE is configured to synchronize when automatically connected, the toolbar icon shall show the time since the last successful synchronization
My phone:SE K810i
Firmware: R6BC, build 002
MPE: 1.6.6
OS: Windows2000

Its extremly difficult to handle perfect syncs when the connection get lost. You are not the first one which has problems with automatic sync. MyPhoneExplorer should be stable and usefully - i think i will remove automatic syncs in the future versions. This is better than to search and fix neverending problems for syncing.

Yes, I could imaging the problems. I kind of having the same problems my self when automating production tests for electronic device prototypes. You never know when the line will drop, if you have bit errors or if the device just reboots in or between a command sequence.

But it's not impossible!!! So far, this application looks better then SE own application, but from what I heard, the built in sync application in VISTA should be (at least) useful. I.E. If you want to stay on top you should consider taking MPE to a thrust-worth background synchronization tool that the user not even need to know about.

Let me know if I can help
