Duplicated contacts on phone suddenly (Outlook is OK)

I have been using MPE for many years without any major issues.
This morning I noticed that all the contacts on my phone had been duplicated so instead of 900 on my phone, I had 1800 contacts. Outlook 2013 was still showing 900 contacts.
I am not aware that I had made any changes to MPE settings.
In the MPE phone client, I still have contact-accounts to sync set as phone only.
In the MPE Windows client, I still have only sync to contacts on phone.

Perhaps a change in Android contacts has caused this?

I have now deleted all the contacts on my phone and forced a sync from Outlook > Phone. I now have 900 contacts on my phone again.

I have the same problem but when I erased the duplicate it took out both entries on my phone and both in outlook.
