What causes phone ID to change?

It's happened a couple times with at least 2 different phones (Samsung S7, Google Pixel 3a) where one day the "phone ID" changes and I get an error:

It was not possible to connect to <original profile name>, would you like to connect instead to Google Pixel 3a [new string of letters].

Once I setup a new profile, I can continue to sync without any issues, but now I have another profile (e.g., I see 2 Google Pixel 3a folders under my %AppData%\MyPhoneExplorer folder).

Anyone else experience this? Anyone know why this happens and how to prevent? Fortunately, it's not a major issue, but a minor inconvenience.

Happens to me when (not all the time) I change the ROM on my phone. Doesn't cause me a problem because I use Outlook as my 'master' so just go with the new ID.
