Malware, yes or no

Beitrag von MSS »

After installation of MyPhoneExplorer 1.8.4, my antivirus ESET NOD32 found 3 "infections" :

A variant of Win32/Somoto.A
Win32/InstallMonetizer.AH
Win32/DownloadAdmin.A.Gen

The previous versions of MyPhoneExplorer did not have this problem. I would like to know what the developer has to say about this, please.

Are these false positives? If so, why do they appear?
I would be ready to pay for this previously excellent software in order to remove this problem and also not have all kinds of other stuff that tries to be added during the installation.

thank you

I just did the same scan using the same tool you mentioned. My scan only found 1 threat,

Win32/InstallMonetizer

in the MyPhoneExplorer installer itself.

A Google search shows that both Win32/InstallMonetizer.AH and Win32/DownloadAdmin.A.Gen shows that both are ad wrappers for the installer. InstallMonetizer monetizes the installation - that is, gives the developer money every time the installer is run. According to a few reports, this is done by handing over some types of personal information from an overview of your system during the install process. It therefore rates as "adware" but isn't a trojan and doesn't spread. DownloadAdmin seems to allow advertisers to offer you downloads, which grants the developer who integrated it into their app cash for this.

Check where ESET found those threats. If it is the installer itself, I guess they aren't too bad - they only run upon the installer running. The adware is not really welcome, as the developer also asks for donations, but I guess he/she feels it is a necessary evil. If the threats have been placed into the OS itself then I must seriously question the legitimacy of this software.

I agree and strongly suggest ESET, because it is the best in this field. I do not think that this is a problem, just check google for more informations. Kind Regards.

They are no false positives. I get some dollars throught the advertising in the setup since many years. Some years ago it was no problem but it seems a good AV-Software has to find in current days also promotion screens so that the user think: God bless i had this AV-Software, i will never move to another AV-Software
