New to Android and confused

Background:

I just bought a used T-Mobile G2 phone. I have no data plan and do not want one. I really just want a cell phone that also has PDA functionality-- I used to carry around a separate phone and a really old Palm Pilot. It did what I needed-- it synced with my Outlook calendar, contact, tasks, etc. The Palm Pilot is dead now.

So now I'm trying to get this Smart Phone (too smart!) to just do these really easy things that I need. I'm so thankful I found MPE-- I think it will do the trick!

I have installed the MPE software on my PC (Windows XP) fine. MOST (!) of the MPE software also appears to have installed correctly onto my G2 from the computer. Yay!

Problem 1: None of my Outlook calendar/contacts/notes/etc are showing up in the MPE program and I can't find out how to get them to "talk." I have Outlook running, but the MPE calendar is still completely blank.

Problem 2: I tried to sync the MPE calendar with the phone, hoping that would perhaps "jump start" things and force it to look for Outlook. Instead it informs me "There are no calendars on the phone! Create a test-appointment on the phone to ensure that a calendar exists."

I bought the G2 used-- the only calendar that is on it right now requires syncing online-- it wants either a Google or corporate calendar login. Is that the "normal" Android calendar? Should I find some other calendar online and install it on my phone?

Can anybody point me in the right direction? MPE For Dummies? Anything?

I'm getting so ticked off with this $150 paperweight. I can't get it to do anything I need except make a phone call. I have a lot of kids, and I really need to be able to carry my calendar around with me. I haven't had to carry a paper and pen calendar for years, but it's getting to that point...

One thing that has changed-- I did temporarily get onto a WiFi network so I could try and sync the native Android calendar with Google Calendar. So now I can at least open a completely blank calendar on the G2. BUT-- now MPE says it can't connect to my phone at all. "Connection to phone could not be established!" Meanwhile, the G2 reports "MyPhoneExplorer Client Waiting for connection" under notifications.

- on MyPhoneExplorer PC side, did you Check File/Settings/Sync and there check what calendar was declared?

- on MyOhoneExplorer on your Android device, did you check in the settings what calendar were declared for Synchronization?

On the Android, "Calendars to Sync" has NULL checked off. I hope (?) that is the blank calendar I was able to set up?

On the PC, it's set to Outlook 2007, Personal Folders\Calendar. To avoid "overloading" anything on the first sync, I limited the data set to five days previously + 5 days in the future.

Still-- connection to phone cannot be established.

if you get a message "connection to phone cannot be established", first thing is to troubleshoot that point, understanding why the connexion cannot be established. From my own experience, the reasons why I encoutered some difficulties to obtain connection initially (when I was not yet familiar) are:

- forgetting to lauch MPE one my phone,
- forgetting to launch WiFi on my phone
- having my phone connected to WiFi; but not realizing that it had caught a free WiFi network available in my vicinity rather than that of my own network
- having the wrong type of connection (USB rather than WiFi) set in File/Settings...

Before any atttempt to sync anything, you should select File/Connect... ; as long as you are not succesfull on that step you cannot expect anyother function to work
