Can't edit files using Files menu?

Beitrag von Buck Naked »

If I open a file from the phone and edit it (have tried .txt and .xlsx), it seems the changes aren't saved back to the phone even though the changes are seen in the cached version of the file. I have tried running multi sync after the editing, but that doesn't change anything.

So how do I go about to make sure that files I edit on the phone (through MPE files view) are really edited?

Btw, great program, really happy to see it working with Android as I previously used it with my old SE phone.

(Running SE X10 mini, Windows XP SP3 btw)

Cheers,
Buck

If the filesize is equal then MPE cannot recognise a change. In this case use the little refresh-button in the details-view of the filebrowser in MPE

Did not work?

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work even if the file size changes.

I have tried creating a small .txt-file, uploaded it to the phone, and then edited it (using Notepad) by adding a few rows of random text, and saved the file. When I re-open the file in MPE it shows the old version of the file, even in the cache-location. This has been reproduced on two computer setups.

Using the refresh-button also changes nothing unfortunately.

Does the filesize change in the properties-pane of MPE ?

OK, is the filesize changed after you restarted the client on phone ?

No.

Just to be sure I tested it correctly:

I connect my phone (SE X10 mini, Android 2.1 but the problem was also present when using 1.6) using USB (which in turn starts the MPE client on the phone), go to the files menu, and open a .txt-file placed in \sdcard\download. I edit it using notepad, adding a few lines of text, and save. Then I shut down the client on the phone, causing a disconnect also seen on the computer client. I then manually start the phone client and reconnect using F1 on the computer. Again, no changes are seen and the size and time of the file stays the same as when I first placed it on the phone. :-(

Another observation:
When I first look at the files in MPE, it shows the .txt file as not cached. When I edit it, it changes to Yes (ie cached) and the changes are seen in the locally stored file (on c: drive). If I click the Refresh preview button (under file properties), it still says the file is cached, but the changed file in cache is overwritten by the unchanged file from the phone.
If I click the Refresh view button at the top, it seems the cached file is deleted from the c:\, and MPE shows the file as not cached.

Now is everything clear. I misunderstood your request. If you open a file in the filebrowser of MPE and edit the file then it gets not transfered back to phone. This is normal - just like you would work with a FTP-Client. What was the reason for editing the txt ? Maybe the feature File-Sync is interesting for you.

Actually, for me the regular behaviour using f. ex. FlashFXP is that if I edit a file on a remote server, the edited file gets transfered back to the FTP. I don't know why it shouldn't - if you edit it, surely you want it to keep the changes.. (in my opinion)

Anyways, I'm glad that we resolved that it is a design decision and not a bug. I will look into the file sync function.

Thanks,
Buck

This has historical reasons. In older supported phones (from SonyEricsson) it was technically not possible to overwrite a file, so i did not implement this functionality. And for the Android-Version i did not think about it
