Ad Hoc WiFi Connections and XP sp3

Beitrag von mikesusangray »

Beautiful program - I'm really impressed!

I'm running the latest software versions (just downloaded from here and Android Market). Phone HTC Desire (2.2 updated), PC is an XP on Sp3.

One issue: I work at a university and use a private laptop that's independent of the university LAN. When I need to go in I use wired connection and a VPN - but for the most part I work offline. In this situation it would be nicve to maintain a WiFi connection between my laptop and the HTC Desire. In my home network that works fine, but I work I would hvae to establish some kind of direct link.

Is there anyway to do this? It seems like the WLAN Hotpot function could make this possible ...

Sorry, i have no idea how to enable Ad-Hoc on Androids, and even if its possible in general.

OK!

Ad-Hoc is a headache on Androids. When I offer an Ad-Hoc connection out of my XP machine, the Android doesn't even see the network. There is a Windows 7 program that does it quite easily, but it require w7.

There are some other Android-side work arounds, but they seem a great deal more complicated than I want to bother with. (Root the device, change several lines of code, etc.)

Maybe I'll just bring an old wireless router to work and create a two machine local network ...

If Bluetooth weren't such a headache on XP, I'd use that. But every single time I've tried to use BT, I've sworn never to do it again ... (And, of course, the range is pretty bad.)
