Text Messaging Database (I need your opinions on this)

Beitrag von Bruno De Barros »

Hi. I have been developing something for MyPhoneExplorer users, I wonder what you all will think of it. :)

I have around 50K text messages stored on my computer. My phone has a small storage capacity (150 text messages), and I always store my text messages on the computer, in order to free up my message storage memory on the phone. So I ended up with about fifty thousand of them. But in my opinion, the MyPhoneExplorer Archive was TOO slow to filter them, whenever I wanted to find a specific text, or just see texts that I had sent before. So I decided to make something to get rid of that problem. I programmed a small website. Basically, I just go to MyPhoneExplorer, export the whole archive into an XML file, and then upload it to the website, and ALL the texts are stored in a much faster database (queries take 0.001 seconds on average). This has enabled me with a much better/more organized way of accessing my text messages.

Besides the obvious speed advantage when browsing the archive, it also allowed MyPhoneExplorer to move texts to the archive much faster (when I had the huge archive, it'd take quite a while to move the texts). Moreover, my texts are now stored on the website, meaning that whenever I format my computer or use MyPhoneExplorer on another computer, my messages are stored in a safe place that only I can access. There's no more need for backups.

What I wonder is, would there be any need, from the MyPhoneExplorer community, for this service to be publicly available? Would it be of any great use?

Good work, i know tht the filter is too slow for this huge amount but there was no way to make it faster. With a MySQL-Datebase it works better - as you did it.

Personally i don't need it cause i think I'll never reach this amount of messages, but maybe its usefully for some other users.

 Yeah, I send too many texts. I wish I knew more about desktop programming, maybe I'd be able to help developing MPE :(

Hey, by the way, FJ, 1.7.2 seems to crash a lot more times than 1.7.1 (I don't even thing 1.7.1 ever crashed on me  ), have you noticed that?

On my PC MyPhoneExplorer never crashes, but you are right - some users tell me about more crashes in v1.7.2. But its hard to find cause noone can tell me on which actions MPE does crash.

Well, trying to recall when the app crashes, it's usually when I get one text, and I Begin Chat, then I'm replying, and another text comes and I hit reply on it immediately, then I go to start typing and boom! That's the best I can do, I'm sorry >.< I can record what I'm doing, if you want me to, so you can see under what conditions the crash is triggred. :)

I sent quite a few text messages also and I reformat my computer often, I think it'd be great if you'd post a tutorial on how to do this.

@paint, sorry for the delayed answer, I'm in Portugal at the moment and not able to do anything, but I'll be back on Saturday and I'll start working on a way to get this website/script released. :) I'll probably make it an online service, so it won't be anything hard to use.

It'll be something like:
1) Sign Up.
2) Login.
3) Create a backup file of your SMS Archive (in XML format, I can get a video / screenshots explaining this).
4) Upload the backup file.
5) Browse all your SMS messages, manage the contacts in your phone, filter/organize your messages, all of that. :)

What do you think?

EDIT: Not the contacts *IN* your phone, just the people who sent/received the text messages.

sounds good, but would there be any way you would release the stuff to allow me to put it on my own webserver? I'd prefer to have all of my stuff on my personal server

Of course, privacy is important. :) Do you have an e-mail or any way I can reach you to keep you updated?
