Contact changes not syncing with Google

I've recently changed a lot of contacts, mostly adding email addresses. I have MPE set to sync my contacts with Google but these changes seem not to be updated on Google. There is no error message and the sync seems successful but the Google address book does not contain the changes. Each time I sync it shows me these differences between MPE and Google and asks me which I want to update. Strangely, changes to other contacts I've made since the large set of changes are synced without any problem!

Any ideas?

Google rejects changes if the mailaddress already exist in another contact. Maybe this is the problem.

I was about to reply and say this wasn't the problem when I realised the problem contacts all had Googlemail addresses and I had them entered in Google Talk. They didn't show up in Google mail's contacts but once I deleted them from Google Talk the sync worked.
