mpe crashes when xxx "begin chat" icon at top

Long time user (at least since 2013, that's the earliest backup date I have right now), always been super-happy with MPE! Well, until the last year or two, that is.

I've been experiencing a crash every time I click a contact name in the conversations tab then xxx on the begin chat icon. I've updated the software and the phone's app at least twice now yet this still happens all the time.

I use mpe mainly for txting through my phone, but also use it as a backup for my data, and I've migrated the data from many phones and many earlier versions of mpe, not sure if that may be the cause, but having to rebuild the data from scratch just scares me as I've had stuff disappear off my phone in trying that many years ago.

Is there anything I can try to resolve this issue? It only happens if the last txt was NOT from me, and it has to be at least a day or two old before it crashes. Seems I can close the program, open it up and the last few txts will open just fine and I can use the chat icon.

Interestingly, the "new message" button allows me to start a chat to anyone, redardless of when we last txted, with zero issues, its only when I use the begin chat button!

Appreciate any help/guidance to rid me of this really annoying and time-consuming issue!

Will do so shortly. FYI, I uninstalled MPE 2.1 from my computer, cleared everything out, copying the old mpe directory with my phone backup files.

Reinstalled fresh copy of mpe 2.1, connected one phone only, allowed it to import all the data and info. Still crashes when trying to use button at top.

Curious, is there a data limit to messages? I noticed I was over 2gb for message attachments and messages.dat is at 12,992kb in the directory. Thinking there's an issue with how much data is held in the mpe user's directory.

Does this happen only for a special person or also for contacts without messages in the past?

Sorry for late reply, have been busy last several months and just living with the issues.

It has a pattern, but I can't determine what the issue is that makes it fail. Right now I logged into the phone from mpe ver 2.1 (downgraded to see if it would help, it does not), I click on a contact in the CONVERSATIONS window, I then click on the first message (you have to do that or the yellow "" bubble does not highlight), sometimes I get a message window, usually if its a message that I received within the last day or so. Other times I get this:

I've also noticed with the last 2 versions that things move very slow and now I am not receiving messages from the phone consistently. I have to keep hitting refresh to get it to see there is a new txt from the phone.

I really don't want to lose all my data, but if its necessary, I will uninstall, wipe the data out and start over again if you think this would fix the issues. FYI, this is still on my office pc running windows 7.

To eliminate any issues on the phone side, this phone is NOT rooted, it has the app installed correctly, and is a Galaxy S20 Ultra5G. I just updated the phone to the latest OS and have google messages now installed (due to Verizon requiring an RCS capable messaging app and no longer supporting the old Samsung Messages (not messages+) app that I've used for many years).

The bigger issue now is that it is no longer updating properly, so I am not seeing txts coming in on the pc and I have to continue to look at the phone to see if someone has txted me.
