Problems in Vista: opening Options crahes MPE

Windows Vista Premium
MPE 1.6.1 (same problem when using 1.5.9 and 1.6.0 though)
SE PC Suite also installed (in case it helps)
VB6 updates (from another post) installed (do you need to install these on Vista?)

I can use basically use MPE in Vista although it crashes fairly often, or I get the error message "Could not open COM3". But if I'm patient I can generally upload files eventually, download texts etc.

But when I open Options, the dialog displays then MPE crashes immediately.

Fantastic software by the way - used MPE on XP for a while and loved, so I'd love to get it working on Vista.

Delete the file general.ini in the Database-Folder - but be sure that you have saved it before. Then start MPE and open the Optionswindow. If MyPhoneExplorer doesn't crash then send me please the general.ini via mail

d.aniel, you are not alone with all the crashes and error of opening COM3.

I have feedback before but FJ doesn't seem to get such problem and I cannot explain futher for him though.

Moved the general.ini, but it didn't make any difference. The behaviour was exactly the same: opened Options and MPE crashed. Tried to connect to device and got the COM3 error.

Is there anything else I could send that would help?

Suddenly had the thought to change the compatibility for the .exe. Found it was set to Windows 98, changed it to XP and now everything works perfectly.

Whats the problem ?

I think the log looks fine, but everytime i try to look at my files on the phone MPE breaks down, so I hobe you could tell me whats wrong.

Install the patch "Common Controls for VB6". You can get it on the sites of microsoft.

This solved my problem too! I'm so happy now!

I run vista (32bit) and as soon as I tried browsing files on the phone MPE crashed instantly.

I installed this patch on Vista even though it does not list Vista as a "Supported Operating System" and problem was solved:
