Confused address syncs

In Thunderbird I have Personal, Contacts, and Collected addresses.
In MPE I have Google, sync with Thunderbird and advanced Personal and Contacts. bu collected sync turned off
On Android contacts I have lots and lots of duplicates.
I want to keep Google sync turned off because I'm cruising around the world on a sail boat and often don't have internet and when I do I'd rather not use it up with syncing. I would like to maintain my master addresses on Thunderbird and sync back and forth with mpe to android, disabling google address as much as possible. At various times in the past I've had whatsap and some other address book show up in MPE, but I just got a replacement phone and don't see them now.

Is there a way to achieve my objective and, if so, which settings should I use where?

And, how to clean up the duplicates? I find that new addresses entered on the phone don't end up in thunderbird and vice versa. Usually one of the duplicates is missing a lot of information,

If I have duplicates and during sync say "don't sync this one again", is it eventually deleted or does it hang around?

I'm confused. Thanks for any help.
