Norton Removes the download file

Beitrag von JackDustySM »

This is happening to me too. I suspect that it is NOT the case there is an attached virus, as the download would have been withdrawn amid uproar.

It is much more likely - in my view - that something within Norton is being very fussy and the download file has wrongly been given the classification of "untrustworthy".

Now us Norton users could individually contact Norton and try and get this changed, but the software company behind the software has a lot more clout.

This is what Norton states about the download file:
"Filename: myphoneexplorer_setup_v1.8.7.exe
Full Path: c:\users\andrew\downloads\myphoneexplorer_setup_v1.8.7.exe

Norton kills the install file of 1.8.7

Beitrag von st_nz »

Having failed to get it past Norton I downloaded the setup (exe) file to a thumb drive and then right clicked on it and ran a 'Scan Now' from the Norton Internet Security menu. Although it appeared to be just the one exe file in Windows Explorer the Norton report said it had scanned two files and had removed them. i.e. It disappeared from the thumb drive.

Is there an attachment that we can't see? Is that what's called a Trojan?

Hopefully the developers will give us an answer, but version 1.8.6 continues to work fine.

Guys, why for pete's sake don´t you use the original download link from the developer?

Thanks for the link Koelner. My hopes were raised, but dashed once more by Norton. It was the program itself which offered the update, presumably therefore, from the same source as yours. C'est la vie.

Peace,

Try installing the actual beta instead:

http://www.fjsoft.at/files/MyPhoneExplo ... Update.exe

This converts the 1.8.6 to 1.8.7.

Thanks again, Koelner,

This started off better, not being immediately deleted by Norton. This time it still died but later in the process, about 10% of the way through the installation. The claimed threat name (not shown previously) is SONAR.heuristic.132. Is that helpful?

Peace,

Bego

Well, kill norton. That´s the only thing you can do.
It´s quite strange that only Norton users seem to have this problem and all the other MPE users don´t.

Thanks Koelner,
Disabling Norton enabled the new install file to run and all seems ok. Took all of 2-3 minutes so turned Norton back 'on' immediately afterwards and the new MyPhoneExplorer is working fine.

When I tried to download 1.8.7 I had an immediate Trojan Horse alert from AVG which I foolishly ignored and it downloaded a strange web browser which over rode my existing browser and was extremely difficult to uninstall.
So there appears to be an issue somewhere and it is spoiling what is a very useful piece of software

Antivirus notifications

Beitrag von JonesDOA »

Hi,

I was downloading the latest beta from "http://www.fjsoft.at/files/MyPhoneExplorer_DebugUpdate.exe" a few minutes ago.

It set off Symantec Download Insight - first time that has happened in my years of using MyPhoneExplorer. I've also downloaded both the current release and the debug update multiple times this year 2017 already, without something like this happening.

I just came across this chain, and I'm just wondering if there might be some particular reason why this is occurring, and whether or not anyone has reached out to Symantec to ask. The reason might be benign but it could be something else too. I saw other much older threads when I searched that had to do with virus notifications. Are anti-viruses just tripping over something minor?

In my case, it is reporting a signature of "WS.Reputation.1". It also reports as "Unproven. There is growing evidence that this file is trustworthy", "Very Few Users. This file has been seen by fewer than 5 Symantec users." and "Very New. Symantec has known about this file approximately 2 days."
