After downloading 1.8.7. the installation actually starts after the install setup questions. Then it stops declaring that MPE is running when actually it is not. It also displays the message "Please Close My Phone Explorer to continue". The it locks up and can only be stopped by Task Manager. Currently running 1.8.6 on Win 8.1 and that works fine.

Found a solution. I left the message still up and started MPE. that made the dialog box go away and the installation went on to completion.
