For no obvious reason, MPE has suddenly started aborting immediately after syncing SMS messages with the phone (HTC One, Android 4.4).
Here's the last few lines of the debug.txt file:

At this point, MPE just aborts. Do non-SMS stuff and it's OK, sync SMS or send SMS and it dies.
It was fine earlier in the day when sending / receiving SMS, then just stopped working. No known changes to system or phone software .

PS: It would be nice to have a fix for the problem where text messages consisting of multiple SSM are not broken into their separate parts. That seems to have happened after the Android V4.4 update a while back.

Problem solved - desktop size affects MPE somehow

It turns out that it's desktop size related. I happen to have 2x 1920x1200 displays, driven by an Nvidia card. When in dualview mode, the displays are independent (which is my usual means of working). When in single desktop mode (needed for dreamweaver + photoshop due to problems with how those handle multiple screens), the desktop is now 3840 x 1200.
In single desktop mode, MPE just aborts when sending / receiving SMS messages. Messages get sent / received, but not displayed. It may be related to where MPE is trying to place the pop-up taskbar window.
In dualview desktop mode, MPE works. I don't use single desktop mode very often, which is probably why I've not experienced this before.
