With new Samsung Galaxy S4 phone I've been trying to connect via wifi but it works only sporadically. Phone is connecting to computer via wifi at all times. It usually connects after a delay of a few minutes (e.g., after leaving the premises and returning) but won't connect after a computer reboot, only after a long delay. It works fine on USB. Any ideas? I'd like for wifi to work reliably to take stress off the USB connector.

Update: Just tried using a fixed IP address and it worked the first time with no problems. Will continue to test.

Using a static IP address is no more reliable than the wifi setting. Any ideas? For the time being I'm back to USB.

I use an ip bound to my phone's mac address. Connects every time. I only connect manually though, I have no auto-connects set up. Have you tried to reboot your router? If not connected can you 'ping' the phone from your pc?

I'm fine connecting only manually. Could you provide a step-by-step explanation for getting this set up? BTW, I have wifi on the router set up with a MAC filter.

The phone is always connected to the router and works fine to access the internet, etc. There is no problem with that, it just is very balky connecting to MPE. BTW I'm using multisync for Outlook and file transfer.

I have a Draytek router (2820n) and this has a Lan setup of 'Bind ip to MAC'. So even though I am running dhcp I have some hardware where I assign a specific ip address to it based on its mac address. That way I have the phone still setup to accept any given ip address via dhcp so I can still connect to other wifi networks without changing any setup on the phone. I also found when I first started using MPE that a static ip was more reliable. Though that was in 2010 and I think that there were some issues with Android's wifi handling then as well. As everything 'just worked' since then I haven't bothered changing things back to see what happens.

So, check your router for something similar.

Thanks for your help with this issue. I have an ancient Linksys WRT54G and I don't see a setting like this. I guess I'll have to use USB for connecting with MPE, which is okay I guess.

Seems the stock firmware for those routers doesn't have the capability. But if you check these threads ... http://www.wirelessforums.org/alt-internet-wireless/linksys-wrt54gl-assign-static-ip-mac-address-5537.html ... and ... http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21671943-Router-that-can-assign-a-specific-IP-by-MAC ... you'll see that you can get 3rd party firmware that will do the job. Up to you if you want to go that route ... Cool

I think I stumbled upon a solution. Looking into MPE Client on the phone I noticed a setting, Launch Client Automatically. In that section Bluetooth was checked and wifi was not. BT can't be used because I have the S4 linked to my home phone system. I disabled BT and enabled wifi, whence the phone immediately connected to MPE and hasn't loss the connection yet, although testing has been only over the past few hours. I walked outside long enough to lose wifi connection, then back inside and it connected immediately both to the phone and MPE.

When this setting was disabled I'm not sure why it would not connect manually, though. Question: MPE recommends setting up a PIN, but is there a need if I use Mac address filtering?

I use mac address filetering as well and never use a PIN with mpe. There is almost zero chance of anyone being able to sit within range of my wifi signal and try to piggy back off of it (because of where I live/size of - detached - house). TBH even if I lived in a block of flats I probably still wouldn't use one.

Your mileage may vary though .....

My house is also isolated and I feel the MAC filtering is good enough.

I spoke too soon on the fix. Today when I booted the computer the phone wouldn't connect even manually, so I'm giving up on a wifi connection for now and will just connect via USB. I don't think I want to hack on the router's firmware since it is working and reliable. Besides, it would seem that if the phone connects to the router, which it does at all times, MPE should also connect. When the error comes up it specifies the correct IP address, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Here's a question. Is it the physical connection (does the phone connect to the network?) or the software connection (MPE gives an error message?)

The reason I ask is because I've had similar problems after a disconnect/reconnect over wireless. I'll get an error message from the MPE on my PC, something like "Connection impossible" or something like that.

The fix was simply to go into the client (on the phone) & exit the client, then restart the client.

After doing this, MPE connected just fine.

I had a thread on this a month or so back that discussed exactly the problem as I describe it above if you want to search for it.

Good luck!

It never has a problem connecting to the network and shows in the MPE Client section as being connected. It just won't connect to MPE on the computer in a timely manner. If you leave it in range long enough it will usually connect, but I haven't figured out a pattern or interval for this behavior.

I'll go search for that, and thanks for the tip. I wouldn't want to have to enter, then exit MPE Client every time I want to connect.

I now have connection set for "Autodetect," and if USB is not connected it will eventually connect via wifi when in range. Since I don't need to multisync that often, for the time being I'll set it to Autodetect and it if isn't connected when I'm ready I'll simply plug it into the USB cable.

To update, I've had it on Autodetect and it will connect to wifi if you don't rush it. I usually don't need it to connect immediately, and if I do I can always plug in the USB cable, so I think this will work out. Lately it's been connecting automatically when the computer boots.

Please test the current betas and tell me if it works better: http://www.fjsoft.at/files/MyPhoneExplorer_DebugUpdate.exe
www.fjsoft.at/mpeclient.apk

Why:
It seems some routers do not like the UDP Broadcasts of MyPhoneExplorer because they do not follow official standards. In the betas MyPhoneExplorer Client does act now also as regular UPnP device which should bring a better WiFi discovery.
