After posted the question, I deleted the client from the Pixel and reloaded it being careful to grant all the required permissions. Client version 1.0.74 (same as before).
Now it DOES show Internal storage. System storage still shows as empty, but that is not a problem for me since I only wanted ...

On my phones running Android versions 10 and below, everything works fine with MPE v1.8.15.
