I just realized that my phone is showing that the data file for android contacts is over 900MB. I don't know if this was because of some android bug, some samsung bug, or some bug in MyPhone Explorer's sync. Using Android App manager, I cleared the data for Android contacts and restarted the phone ...

It looks like I am having issues with sync of the calendar at this point as well. Not sure what is causing this. Any insight on how to troubleshoot this?
