Suddenly had the thought to change the compatibility for the .exe. Found it was set to Windows 98, changed it to XP and now everything works perfectly.

Yes, exactly the same behaviour.

Moved the general.ini, but it didn't make any difference. The behaviour was exactly the same: opened Options and MPE crashed. Tried to connect to device and got the COM3 error.

Is there anything else I could send that would help?

Windows Vista Premium
MPE 1.6.1 (same problem when using 1.5.9 and 1.6.0 though)
SE PC Suite also installed (in case it helps)
VB6 updates (from another post) installed (do you need to install these on Vista?)

I can use basically use MPE in Vista although it crashes fairly often, or I get the error ...
