Restore overwrites contacts - Why does it delete new entries

In my work we have all been issued with Sony Ericsson G502 phones.
We have a standard distribultion list for which I created a backup file of contacts.
A colleague wanted to use this to add to his list of contacts on his Sony Ericsson G502 phone.
We check to see if there was a way of importing contacts from backups without deleting his existing contacts.
Not finding such a feature we thought that a restore would do the same. Sadly we were mistaken and the restore of my backed up contacts wiped his existing contacts.
Fortunately he had not set up many until then so it was not too bad.
Can an import function be provided or can the restore function be extended to perform a restore or update based on a a prompted response?
I am newbie on this forum so I am not sure if this question has already been asked. I did try searching and checking but found none I could of course be wrong on this.
