In the settings dialog, under "Sync"->"Contacts"(Outlook 2003 selected), in the Advanced dialog, there is an check-box for "Use Outlook-Addin".

What is this option? And when will I want to use it?

If you enable this setting then you can use MyPhoneExplorer directly in Outlook. f.e. if you rightclick a contact you can directly send a sms to the contact. The sync works also without the addin.
