Language problem

I have downloaded My Phone Explorer version 1.7.1 and am running Windows Vista Ultimate and using the C905 phone. My main use is to sync contacts and calendar with Thunderbird Lightning and this works. The problem is that when I installed MPE I selected English, but whenever I close the program and then reopen, it defaults to Dutch. I reset to English, but the side bar and instructions remain in Dutch. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, but to no avail. I also tried deleting the Dutch language file. It could be a good way to learn a bit of Dutch but I'd prefer not to have to. Any advice please.

Thanks,
Karen

Did you set the correct language in the settings ?
After you restarted - does the settins show english or dutch ?

This value is saved in the registry. Which value is set in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MyPhoneExplorer" for the field "Language" ? Does the field "Language" exist ?

And even the settingswindow shows Deutsch as language ? Thats very strange. Does the English.lng file exist in the languagedirectory ?

Yes, it is indeed very strange. And yes, the English lng file is in the language directory. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall one more time. It looks like I'll need to give myself a good tutorial on what all the buttons do, set it up exactly as I need and learn by rote which buttons the various commands are on; then continue to run it in Dutch.

maybe MyPhoneExplorer is not able to read the languagefile cause of access-problems. Which permissions you have on the current account ? Admin or User ?

I have not set up my computer with separate user accounts so automatically go in with admin permissions. However, when launching some programs I am asked to click on 'permission to continue' under Vista's User Account Control. I don't get any such requests when running MPE but could this be a factor?

I have seen reports of other programs working ok in XP and giving problems in Vista. In that particular case simply disabling the User Account Control did the trick. Don't know if it could be of any use in your case.

Could it be really so simple ? I think if this would cause the problem then i would have alot of more people which has the same problem. But anyway - you can try it.

Another thing which could help to find the problem: In the settings you can select the holidays which are shown in the calendar. Please set a holidayfile and check if the holidays are displayed in the calendar of MyPhoneExplorer (f.e. on new years day) - the calendarfiles are also stored in the programdirectory so if this also does not work then it must have to something to do with file-access.

Well thank you, Béèm, for that insight! I turned off User Account Control and MPE is running in English. However, I now have a security alert in my toolbar from Windows telling me I'm at risk from malware or spyware. Am I really at risk? If so, it would be reassuring to have another safer solution to this problem.

I loaded the UK holiday dates file and that works fine. Don't want it though as it won't let me put in any appointments on Christmas Eve!

I cannot belive it. I also have Vista installed and i tested it also with enabled User Account Control - worked without problems. Where did you installed MPE - in C:\Program files ?
Am I really at risk?
In my opinion you are not at risk. UAC basicly prevents that other tasks can start programs which can change system-settings. I have disabled it cause i hate the annoying window if i want to start a system-tool or setup but its your decition.

Yes, I loaded MPE into C:\Program files.

Just to confirm that User Account Control was the answer, I turned it back on, restarted Windows and MPE reverted to Deutsch. I then disabled User Account Control, restarted again and MPE is now back in English.

Thanks for the advice about the security alert and I have now turned off the warning. I have good protection software so am sure it is all fine.

The program I was speaking of is a news client MesNews.
In the support group (French) some people didn't have problems with UAC enabled some others did have problems. When they turned UAC off the program worked.
It was never clear why this difference in behavior.
