Hi all,
For the past 4 years, I have been using MPE with an HTC Desire. On my PC, there's only one "user", that is the HTC Desire. Love that phone but the batteries give me a very low battery life.
In the coming days, I will be migrating to a Galaxy S4.
Is there any way, as easy and seamless as possible, to have all my MPE data (call log, calendar appointments, notes, contacts, and SMS messages) on the new phone? Has anyone ever succeeded in migrating their data from one older phone to a newer one?
I'm considering doing this:
* setting up the new phone as any normal Android phone,
* installing the MPE app on the phone,
* adding a new user for the Galaxy S4 phone,
* connecting the MPE app with MPE application on the PC,
* closing MPE on the PC,
* copying the "HTC Desire [XXX]" folder in AppData\Roaming\MPE to the "Samsung Galaxy S4 [YYY]" that will probably be created. [EDIT: It's actually a "samsung GT-I9505 [YYY]" that gets created]
* then, and only then, launching MPE again on the PC and sync'ing the S4 with the PC in the same way that I used to sync the HTC phone with the PC.
Do you think that will work?
I've read the tutorials and FAQ stickies but I didn't find anything remotely connected to what I want to do.
Thank you.
[EDIT: A simpler solution is provided by teeterbug in a post below.] |

I tried the steps I have talked about above.
It works fine to get everything on the PC but it doesn't work as far as SMSes and call log entries go. I had to use an app called "SMS & Call Log Backup" to save the SMS and call log entries on the older phone, then copy the saved data to the new phone and restore it on the new phone.
The good thing with that app is that it merges the saved data with the messages and call log entries that are already on the phone. This is useful if you've started to receive/send messages or phone calls before your migration was complete. Note that the app says the call log is limited to 500 entries.
On next sync, all will be fine: data on the PC and data on the phone, incoming and outgoing.
The only thing I'm still missing is the apps's data from the old phone. |

Yes, you can. First, back up your current phone, go to Extras, Create Backup. It will give you the option of what you want to back up. Then add the new phone and restore back up. You will have options of what you want to restore. |

Thank you Teeterbug for your valuable input. It's unfortunate that you didn't come across my OP as you would have saved me some trouble and frustration. I don't doubt your input will be useful to others.
But as I said in my previous post, I have already started migrating my data and apps to the new phone. Unless I wipe the phone clean, which I can't do because I have received SMS messages and calls that I want to keep.
Anyway, apart from some duplication problems in the call log due to daylight saving times, all is well concerning the things that MPE can handle.
I'll add a link to your post in the OP. |

No problem. I have the Samsung Note 3. You said you were migrating your apps. In my past experience, I have been able to go into my apps and go to the "all" tab to re-install of my apps that were on my phone.
The only thing I don't know if it's possible (or I haven't seen how) are the MMS messages. I don't think MPE allows to send or receive MMS messages. So, those will be missing. If you know of a way to send/receive MMS messages, I'd love to hear it because then it will be able to be saved.
I don't have daylight savings time so, I have not had to worry about that. : ) |

When you reinstalled your apps, did the restoring also restore the app data in addition to the applications' APKs? |

The only app that I can think of is a game that I had to start over, but my apps such as voicemail, music, and other things like that restored without problems. I am trying to think of what else I use aside from that. My text messages were the most important and I have tried the backup and restore feature with success. My emails are all linked through gmail so there was no loss there. |

Thank you teeterbug and vodoomoth! I just got my Samsung Note 3 becuase my Motorola Atrix 2 crashed. I created the backup from cached items in MPE on my PC because I couldn't reload the app on my Atrix. Then reloaded all back onto my new phone! |

Good day,
I recently upgraded from a Samsung S6 Edge to a Samsung Galaxy S8, how do I add the new phone to MyPhoneExplorer?
Kind Regards

I have a similar question so I'll add it here. It's about merging SMS and call history from old phones (or OS updates) in MPE.
I've been using LineageOS custom ROM to get a Lenovo P2 from its official end of life Android 6 to Android 10. Works great but had some hiccups along the way requiring OS reinstalls. Each time ended up with an apparent new phone (three now), each with a subset of calls and SMSs from the time it was active.
I get that it no longer is possible to get those into the phone but could they be merged into one continuous call and SMS history in one of these 'ghost' phones - preferably the most recent, active one? There's no import to match the export function so backup/restore seems the next likely option.
I've backed up the old phones' call and SMS histories from the MPE cache but I'm not quite sure what the restore will do and don't want to mess things up.

The SMS messages can be imported into the SMS-Archive. Just rightclick->Import/Export->Import-> Select the backup file |

That's great, thanks. I'd seen the archive but never really understood it. An archive for call logs too would be awesome. |

I was working with tech support at my mobile phone service on a problem they could not solve, so they said I needed to so a factory reset. I knew I would lose all data, so I thought I would use MPE to save it before the reset. I have used MPE a little, but I am not too familiar with it, so I chose to use Multi-Sync. I made sure it copied photos and all the files I needed to save (which were just in the Download folder).
After the factory reset (which did not solve the problem I was having!), I ran Multi-Sync again. I had set it up as Both Directions, but it looked like it was going to delete the files in the Download folder which had been copied to my computer, so I stopped Multi-Sync at that point and ran it again in PC –> Phone mode and succeeded in copying the files back to the phone. Now all the files I had saved, all the contacts, and all the calendar entries from my phone before the reset had been restored. What was missing was SMS messages.
When I ran Multi-Sync after the reset I was offered two options regarding SMS messages:(1) to delete them or (2) archive them on my computer. I chose (2). Now how can I get them back on my phone? The only option I found for transferring messages from Archive on my computer to my phone seemed to be Copy to Phone > In original storage. But when I tried that, I got an error: "Message could not be saved!"
Is there any way to get these messages back on the phone?
If this ever happens again, is it better to create a backup and restore the backup? How does creating a backup handle apps? I know MPE does not actually back up entire apps, but does it back up a list which makes restoring easier? Does it back up app settings?
FJ, thank you very much for this program. I am making my second donation as soon as I post this. |
