Contact accounts to sync - Phone/Google or both?

I have used MPE to sync contacts with Outlook for many years and the advice then was to only use Phone contacts to sync on the Android app.
As I now have a lot of Google contacts built up, and MPE and Google Contacts have matured, I am wondering what is the best setting to use on the MPE app...
1) Set Phone only to Sync? (As previously)
2) Set Phone and Google account to Sync? (could be confusing!)
3) Set Google account only account to Sync? (Can I trust Google given that Outlook is my main contact app?)
Suggestions/thoughts/recommendations welcome
Whatever strategy I use, I know I am going to have to deal with duplicates etc but I will use use an Outlook plugin for that.
