My Android phone connects to MPE in a very irregular way.
Sometimes it connects but very often it doesn't

On the phone under settings for the MPE client I have pressed:"Start client automatically"

On MPE, which is on my laptop I can't find any "Autodetect" button.

The phone and my laptop are on the same wifi-network.

Can anyone help out?

I've been having connection issues as well, but mine is working fine with wi-fi, just can't get the USB cable to work...

I assume you've tried to manually initiate connection on your laptop (eg with shift+F5)? As far as PC-side autodetect goes, should be here:
File > Connect > Connection > Connect via... [Autodetect]

I also have been having a problem connecting, but only sporadically. When it shows as not being connected in the system tray (grayed out MPE icon) I can usually get it to connect by tapping on the MPE Client icon on the phone, which will normally produce "Client Initializing" at the top left of the phone's screen. At that time it connects and MultiSync starts.

Rarely this will not work and I must turn off wifi on the phone, then back on, at which time it always connects. This is a little ritual I play every few days and I'm quite used to it by now, but it'd be more convenient to have it connect properly every time.

I've been trying to find a pattern or correlation, but so far it seems to be random. It may happen more often when the computer wakes up from sleep mode, however. I always connect via wifi and the "connect via" setting is "Wifi."

The connection problem is 99% solved.

I was inadvertently connected to another wi-fi network. After connecting to my own it worked fine.

However, occasionally I have to switch off the MPE Clent and on again to obtain connection.

One question remains: Where do I find the string File > Connect > Connection > Connect via... [Autodetect]
