fix corrupted phonebook.dat

My phonebook.dat file is corrupted. As a result of odd behavior in synchronizing Thunderbird with my Android phone, many of my >1000 contacts have duplicated phone numbers and email addresses, sometimes as many as 6 copies of the same numbers.
These errors are neither in my Thunderbird address book nor on the phone itself.
I would like to know if there is an easy way to recreate the phonebook.dat file WITHOUT deleting all the records on my phone and then recreating them via the sync function.
If I delete the file and then run the sync program, it will want to recreate all my contacts on the phone, which contacts are already there, so I do not want to do this.
Any simple solution, other than manually editing all the entries?
Thanks.
