These are some notes that may help you if you are not able to add the MyPhoneExplorer addon to Thunderbird version 68. I wrote these notes based on my experience with the latest version of Windows 10 64-bit (version 1909): there may be subtle differences on other platforms.

Beginning with version 68, the Thunderbird addon system was significantly changed. The MPE team have worked to make a compatible add-on, so that version 2.0.25 of the MyPhoneExplorer addon will be able to run with Thunderbird version 68.

If the automatic update does not work, you will need to use the following manual process.

Download the add-on file to your PC from https://www.fjsoft.at/files/mpe-addin.xpi. Save the file to a location of your choice. In Thunderbird, go to the Add-ons tab of the Tools menu and click on the gear symbol at the top right of the dialog. Now you can select the Install Add-on from file … option, which will allow you to install the add-on from the file that you just downloaded.

Take into account that with this version of the add-on, Thunderbird must now be active before syncing, otherwise MyPhoneExplorer will not be able access the data in Thunderbird.

Now you can start up the MyPhoneExplorer app on your PC. You will probably receive an error message saying something like Thunderbird is already running under a different profile. Close Thunderbird to continue. This message does not make sense for most users as they use only one standard profile. The cause of this problem is that the Thunderbird update has created a new user profile in the background, which is not apparent to the user, while MyPhoneExplorer is still trying to load the old profile.

The solution to this problem is to go the File menu of the MyPhoneExplorer app, open Settings. and go to the Sync dialog. Click on the Advanced button for Contacts or Events and tasks. At the top of the dialog there is box called Thunderbird-Profile. Select the drop-down in this box, and make sure that the default-release profile is selected. (This is the name of the new profile that was automatically created by the Thunderbird update.)

If you get an error message saying that Thunderbird is already running under another profile. Close Thunderbird to continue, click on Cancel, so that you can continue and change the Thunderbird Profile as described above.

When the new profile is selected, the available address books or calendars are listed and the dialog can be confirmed.

(Note that the About dialog will still show the MPE version as 1.8.12)

The above describes a workaround to problems encountered with Thunderbird version 68: a formal release that addresses the above problems in a proper manner, including automatic update on the add-on, should be released at some time in the future.

Thanks - Just switched from Outlook to Thunderbird, new PC, could not understand why I'm getting all these funny messages and nothing works.

Spent several hours trying to connect - then found this item, took 2 minutes for MPE and TBird wo sync Smile

Suggestion - why not add a popup / red text in the MPE Settings --> Sync menu ?
