What does sync do?

I don't need to know the code, but I am curious as to how sync works for contacts.

I'm syncing between Thunderbird (24.1.0) and a Samsung Galaxy Ace (Gingerbread 2.3.4). I got my contacts into the phone with .vcf files a long time ago. I now have newer information on both my phone and in Thunderbird for various contacts. I used MPE (1.8.5) to sync contacts, thinking it would find the newest information--be it on the phone or in Thunderbird--and update the older information. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case... It seems the phone had priority for everything, and now my TB address book has a bunch of old info (thankfully, I backed up my TB info before I started).

Is there a setting I'm missing to use the newest information from either the phone or TB and update the other accordingly?

On the first sync MyPhoneExplorer will link the existing phone contacts and Thunderbird contacts based on their name. If the name is not equal then contact x will be stated as not existing in Thunderbird and so he adds it in Thunderbird.

Maybe the reason for your problem was that you did not restrict the contact accounts to sync for MyPhoneExplorer. By default MyPhoneExplorer does list all contacts from all phone accounts (also WhatsApp, Skype,...). This can cause duplicates. You can restrict the sync of contact accounts in the settings of MyPhoneExplorer Client on the phone.
