I have it very similar.
Yesterday I updated from version 1.3.x, which worked well.
After a fresh installation, computer restart, all MPE user data manually scratched - it connected (manually) via BT on comm41, synchronized data without any problem, worked around a minute or two and crashed with MS Windows standard message. This scenario repeated over and over.
Lets go on. After a new start of MPE (after the crash) it tries to connect to a cell phone via last selected com 41 and the process gives up with a popup message "Error,Phone could not be identified."
After that there is a dump from "Debug.txt" - see at the end of this message.
Then, closing the MPE application, deleting both "general.ini" and user's "settings.dat" (deleting only one of them won't help), starting application, manually selecting com 41 and it works again - until it either gives up with a popup message or crashes.
As I typed above, I use to have no serious problem with the 1.3 version.
Of course I can revert back to 1.3, but I have found this forum, so testing if it works

EDIT: Finally, I found it less complicated then I described above.
The MPE fails to connect every time the bluetooth connection was disconnected - reconnected from the last MPE session.
I have found surprising workaround. When MPE fails to connect, I open F2-Options and click Search for devices. The search fails to find connection. I close the Options, press F1 twice (disconnect/connect) and surprise!!! It connects the the cell phone.
