Found on the internet that microsoft blocked "third party" gadgets and the only way to show them up is to reenable UAC control... tried that but no success

WOW that was quick :D

couple minutes ago I've noticed that there are missing some files in 64-bit directory "C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\myphoneexplorer.gadget" these files were though in corresponding x86 directory...

too late You already fixed this and deployed fixed installer 8)

No gadget here on 32 bit Windows 7

At first, after update to 1.8.3 there was still an MPE gadget on my desktop. However it was non-functional - it no longer connected to the phone or MPE application at all.

I re-installed fresh download of MPE - no difference.

I killed and re-started sidebar.exe - no difference.

So, then I un-installed the non-functional gadget, set minimum UAC, re-installed fresh download of MPE 1.8.3. Now there's no MPE gadget in the gadgets palette although there is a fresh mpyphoneexplorer.gadget folder in Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets. I have plenty of other 3rd party gadgets working just fine.

Any suggestions anyone, how to re-enable the gadget?

Gadget gone

I have the same problem in Win 7 Home Premium SP1 Ver 6.1 (Build 7601) 32 bit.

Upgraded to 1.8.3 couple of days ago and the gadget wouldn't run. Uninstalled it from gadget gallery then re-installed MPE. It hadn't returned.

Reading this thread, I've downloaded MPE again and re-installed, tuned off UAC but still no joy.

For me after downloading and reinstalling MPE gadget works flawlessly...
but I did one more thing described below

Maybe this will help:

disable showing all gadgets

move/rename Your "Settings.ini" file from the "users\...\Window Sidebar\..." directory (not "...\program files[...]\Window Sidebar\..."

enable gadgets back again

this will regenerate all properly installed gadgets

EDIT in my case UAC setting on or off brings no change and seems to be irrelevant (had disabled, have disabled and will have disabled :) )

Thank you, interesting suggestion, but no "*sidebar*" folder and in fact no "settings.ini" anywhere in my specific user area or even in users generally, and yes, I do have hidden and system files enabled, so still stuck for now...

[EDIT: I found a Windows Sidebar folder in my user profile, but still no settings.ini]

Thought I'd fixed it?

Killed sidebar.exe. Copied myphoneexplorer.gadget folder from %ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets (this was the copy the MPE install created with today's dates).

Restarted sidebar.exe, now MPE gadget is in the pallete again, and I can add it back to my desktop :)

However, gadget still doesn't do anything.. ..doesn't start MPE, doesn't connect to phone, doesn't send texts, doesn't control phone. Right back where I started :(

The key to solve the problem here is to be sure which "settings.ini" in which directory Your system is using and that file must be recreated

Fixed!

The key was a single file, but the file is actually called general.ini. I found mine in:
  • %APPDATA%\MyPhoneExplorer\
Which equated to:
  • C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\MyPhoneExplorer\
I closed the (broken) gadget, closed MPE, removed (actually, just renamed) general.ini, then restarted MPE and added the sidebar gadget back to the desktop - bravo, it all works again!

Great You have succeeded to solve the problem manually but this is strange that re installation of MPE did not fixed this (his -> MPE) broken file.

The gadget has nothing to do with the file general.ini
