On an Android phone, what exactly is the option to backup the phone doing? What does it back up? And the option to back up the apps, what is it backing up? Does this also back up the data files generated by the apps?
How does this compare to something like Titanium Backup?

Theoretically every app developer can implement such a "Backup handler" but in my opinion there are not many applications which needs this funktionality. Titanium backup is in every case more complete cause it does save all data in raw mode but this can have also bad sideeffects in case you want to restore a Titanium backup which was made with an older Android version.
Titanium Pro: Backups EVERYTHING
Titanium contra: Mayb you will have problems with version update

Ok, Titanium Backup backups everything, but the question still remains - what does MPE's backup do?
Thanks!

Exactly what is shown in the backup wizard:
- Contacts
- Appointments
- Tasks
- Notes
- Messages
- Files
- Applications (they package without userdata)
