Syncing Android contacts Groups with Thunderbird

I'm using MPE to sync the contacts in an Android Samsung Galaxy S with Thunderbird. It mostly works really well but I'm wondering if there's a way to reflect the phone's Groups in Thunderbird. It doesn't appear to do it at the moment so I wondered how it could be done.

Would it be possible for a future version to use Thunderbird categories? There are eight category fields in the TB addressbook so as long as every contact is a member of not more than eight groups perhaps this could be done. Ideally new categories and groups would be created automatically at sync. However even if it we had to manually create corresponding groups and categories beforehand it would be very useful. It would probably have to be optional in case people are using TB categories for other purposes.

Nobody any thoughts on representing Android Contact groups with Thunderbird addressbook categories?

Groups to thunderbird categories

I'd also like to see MPE groups synced to Thunderbird/Lightning categories provided by the MoreFunctionsForAddressBook add-on. That is all that is keeping me from ditching Outlook for Thunderbird.

Thunderbird does not come with Categories functionality and i don't like to bind the users to a third party addon

Agreed, but you could only update the Thunderbird field if lightning is installed. You already have it in MPE, so it would seem to be trivial to selectively update it.

This has nothing to do with Lightning.

The problem is that MyPhoneExplorer has to expect a field-set per sync-target cause the fields have to be also compared for the next sync. Again: i do not want to support third-party-addons

Sorry. I missed the replies to this thread. I see what you mean. I'd forgotten that categories are an add-on feature. It's a shame Thunderbird addressbook development is so slow. One of the reasons I'm really glad you support it.

I agree, the addressbook of Thunderbird looks like in the 90's
