I updated to the beta client to fix the bug where all-day events come back with the wrong date. Now, when I sync Outlook contacts, I get this:

Check the contact-account filter in the settings of the client and tell me which entries you see there / which entries are selected

'Phone' is checked, 'Backup Assistant (phone)' not checked, 'Google' not checked, 'Motorola Service Accounts' not checked. (I am prohibited from allowing my full contact list to leave my domain.)

Enable one account after the other in the settings and everytime you do this click on "Download entire" in MyPhoneExplorer. Then tell me which Account did hold your contacts

I am completely confused... When I check 'Backup Assistant (phone)', things seem to work. What does that mean? What does Backup Assistant have to do with syncing Outlook contacts and Phone contacts?

This means that all your contacts are stored in "Backup Assistant (phone)". When you add a new contact in phone, gets it only listed in MyPhoneExplorer after sync when the above Account is enabled ?

Yikes! (How did you know?) I added a new contact to my phone, but it did not show up in MPE until I enabled the "Backup Assistant (phone)" account...

Unfortunately, that resulted in TWO of every contact in MPE (except the one I added, of which there was only one). So, I DISabled "Backup Assistant (phone)" in the client, hit 'Download Entire' on MPE, and now I have ONE of each contact, except for the one I added, which is now exclusively on the phone (again).

Now I am in a mess! My contact list is now on-line at Verizon Wireless (that is what Backup Assistant does -- it backs up the phone contact list), and, as I said earlier, that is prohibited by law (patient confidentiality). But, if I don't turn that on, contacts I add to my phone don't sync with Outlook, and if I do, I get two of everything except for those I add on the phone!

All I want MPE to do is synchronize Outlook and my Phone... help!

PS: I just noticed there are several entries on the phone that are not showing up in MPE besides the one I added: "Directory Assistance", "#bal", "#min", "#pmt", and "#data", for example.

First, here's how to get rid of the synchronization of your contacts to Backup Assistant on VZW's website:

Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Running tab -> Scroll down and select "Sync Service."

Press Force stop, then Clear data. This will remove the information required to sync contacts from your phone to Backup Assistant on VZW website.

Second, sign in to the My Verizon website, select My Services, then Backup Assistant from the menu bar at the top. Delete all the contacts there and empty the trash. Do NOT run Backup Assistant again on your phone.

You'll still need to select "Backup Assistant (Phone)" under "Contact-accounts to sync" in the MPE Client since that is the Contacts database where "Phone" contacts are actually stored in a phone with Backup Assistant installed. There is unfortunately no way to remove BA from the phone unless you root it.

Also, you'll want to make sure that your Google GMail account is not configured to sync contacts. If it is, your contacts will end up on a Google server somewhere in the cloud which will result in the same issue with having your contacts outside of your own domain.

I remember telling VZW that I had to decline their backup offering (but they may have ignored me), and I don't think I ever turned it on.

Are you knowledgeable re: MPE, too? MPE apparently stored all my contacts on the "phone" in the process of FJ's test (as evidenced by the many duplicates). So they are now in both "phone" and "backup," even though the DROID doesn't seem to show any duplicates. What did checking both "phone" and "backup" in the MPE Client do? Should the client be syncing "phone" or "backup" or both? How do (can? should?) I get back to having just a single, authoritative contact list on the phone?

Have you logged in to Backup Assistant on the My Verizon site? Do your contacts show up there? If so, you need to first go through disabling BA sync and getting your contacts off of VZW's website as I posted.

As far as duplicates go...
Close MPE on your desktop PC, go to the folder that holds your data and delete the Phonebook.dat file. In Windows 7, its C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MyPhoneExplorer\<Phone name [some hex number]>


Set up your MPE client to sync only Backup Assistant (Phone). Start MPE on your desktop computer. Your contacts list will be empty. Click the blue down arrow (Download entire). Does that show correctly or are there still duplicates?

So this means the Backup Assistant replaces the original internal Account - right ? In this case it would make sense to detect Backup Assistant as internal Phone-Account.

@hm: Please select the contact-access to Backup-Assistant only, create a new contact in phone, sync with MyPhoneExplorer and then post the logfile.
