Numberless Gmail contacts do not sync to MPE

Apologies if there is already a thread on this issue, I've searched and not found any.
Using 1.8.0 (and probably earlier versions) I've noticed contacts created in a Gmail account (or synced to it, e.g. with T-bird), that have no phone numbers, are not synced to MPE! No sync log is even produced. Once a phone number is set, the contact is synced to MPE and the phone. Remove the phone number, and the change is reflected at sync, the contact remains as it should.
On the other hand, contacts without phone numbers, created in MPE and synced with Gmail, are uploaded correctly.
Is this a bug?
