Lost with this ADB stuff!

Hi FJ!
I'm not asking you to write a tutorial for me, but I've been trying hard to understand how this ADB stuff works, and I'm geting horribly confused. Maybe you can tell me where to read. I'm new to Android, btw - that's part of the problem! I had an HTC Desire running Froyo and couple PC, both running XP sp3. I have the HTC USB drivers on both machines. (They show up under USBDeview.)
As I understand it, I need this ADB stuff installed to get a working connection to MPE over USB cable. I googled a whole bunch, went down and got this: android-sdk_r07-windows.zip I turned on debugging log on the phone. I unpacked it in C:\. The command "adb devices" returns a good device (HT##### )
Now that I've done that, MPE has a working USB connection. (It's downloading my organizer right now - although the download is going very, very slowly, it *is* going. It's taking about a second per appointment, and I have several years of data, so I guess it takes a while.)
But what have I actually done by downloading some files to a directory on C:\? Do I have to KEEP the stuff in c:\androidsdk\*.* or can I erase that directory now? For that matter, what did I even need it for? It doesn't seem to have installed anything that I can see in Add/Remove Programs.
Also, what does HTC Sync have to do with it all? Do I still need that program or can MPE replace it? I tried deinstalling, but when I choose "HTC Sync" under "Connection Type" the handset looks for HTC Sync and complains that it can't find it. Can I tell it to look for MPE instead?
Again, sorry to be stupid! Android is a new beast!
