Add a 'sticky' on the Forum start page with a (periodically updated) list of "MPE limitations" (like maximum data lengths, accepted formats, etc.) with a short indication of what MPE does if they are exceeded/not met (for example, a text data field with a limit of 225 characters for "User Name", and if a longer length is on phone data, MPE will delete the 'excess'). |

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with that feature in any program I use; it's not standard practice and would require a disproportionate amount of work.
Why don't you ask Google or your phone manufacturer why contact editors on these devices currently only support 1000 characters in contact notes

Well, the app/program documentation would have that info, but unfortunately smarthone apps frequently don't have that.
I imagined this would be quite easy to do, since from your comments in these forums you have many of these limitations in your memory, so just jotting them down and posting it as a 'sticky' might help users. Of course, if it's a lot of trouble, I'll retract my suggestion.

Because I expect it would be a waste of time, and knowing "why" wouldn't help me in any way...

Note that I said "for example, a text data field with a limit of 225 characters for "User Name"; I just remembered this # from another forum post; but 25 is too short, if it's "the user's name'; for example, a name like "Milton Gonçalves de Carvalho Silva" would be fairly usual here, and current smartphone storage should be quite capable of accepting that... |

Entering names with more than 254 characters is possible, but it is not displayed due to space limitations and, if I may say so, is not necessary. |

But that's all this is: I meant "user name", not "User Name" or "User". I agree, "User ID" would be better, specially since in many sites it's an email --but even emails can become a problem, since some 'users' (specially businesses) insist in putting their full commercial name as their email 'name' -- which, with '@server', CAN sometimes come close to 255 chaacters. I personally dislike such emails, but they DO exist.
The problem is fields where the user's real 'name' should be entered, and it's longer than 15 characters -- which is what I was referring to. For example, my full (actual) name doesn't fit on the credit card's "Name" field, and you have to decide on your own how to abbreviate it to fit. |

If you mean how many characters the individual fields in the contacts support, then you should use the name used in MyPhoneExplorer for these fields and not refer to them as "user name"!
I was able to successfully synchronize the following:
First name: 255
Last name:255
E-Mail:255
Company:255
Department:30
Job title:255
Web:255
Phone numbers => Userdefined: 255 |

Sorry for all the trouble you went through due to this; I now understand that you're very focused on MPE, while my earlier response comments were more 'general', I didn't intend to use any specific variable or field names, just to say that in some cases ANY field size limitation CAN matter.
For me, the 'root cause', impacting on the whole Android 'contacts' DB system, and thus on MPE too, is that it was concieved decades ago, and destined for simple cases and a different way of life: Who now has "Home FAX" and "Work FAX"? But the fields are embedded in the DB...; lots of people (persons) now work free-lance and/or part-time for several organizations AND other people, but how to register such situations with one "Home Phone" and one "Work Phone"? Frequently, the existing fields are 'repurposed' for other database functions, which cannot be standardized. If a person contacted me through several phone #s over the years, and I want to be able to see all these calls and SMS, I can't just delete the older #s, since that would leave those calls 'orphaned'. Etc., etc. I was talking about that sort of problem, and how it impacts the uses I try to fulfill with this DB structure -- but I shouldn't have gone down that way, because I had no intention to make you waste your time; sorry.
My original 'suggestion' was a 'top of the head' impulse, because I imagined it might be useful, and easy and quick to do; once you said that was not so, let's just drop it now. |
