I changed the settings to sync with MPE and go this message

'Obex protocol could not be initialized. OBEX error code00. Phone didn't answer.'

The phone calendar is empty, but Outlook 2007 has several years worth of data.

Thanks for that suggestion; I reinstalled the HTC sync software, and here is what happens:

phone connected with USB cable, and the sync appears to start. There is a long wait (10 mins) with the following message: 'Please wait, downloading organiser' and 'initiating sync'.
