On sync its only possible to read/write the binary data of the picture, its not possible to do something with filenames or the path. Cause of this your suggest will not help - i know its a pity, but there is no way to change this behavior.

I'll suggest making this configurable on the SE website ...

If you include the option to never send Pictures with the Contact, would this allow the user to manage the contact manually on the phone and still be able to edit other fields through MPE without affecting the contact pics ...

I have issues with the way the Contact Picture is administered.

I like to keep all my Contact Pictures in a folder on the phone with descriptive file names. For example:
"...\Phone Memory\picture\Contacts\John Doe 01.jpg"
